So, you got braces. That’s fantastic, it means you’re on your way to a beautiful, straight smile that everyone is going to envy. But, you need to remember to keep looking after your teeth for as long as you wear the braces, including brushing and flossing every day. Here are a couple of things that are likely to happen to your dental health if you forget to regularly brush your teeth with braces:
The more food particles get stuck on and in between your teeth, the more chance of being discolored they have. The last thing you want is to get your braces off and realize your teeth are stained!
2. Tooth Decay and Cavities
When you fail to brush properly, or forget to brush, food particles build up on the teeth, causing bacteria to produce acids that eat away at the teeth. This means more cavities.
3. Inflamed Gums
Forgetting to brush your teeth could leave bad bacteria to irritate your gum tissues, inflaming the gums and risking the chances of gingivitis.
4. Bad Breath
Failing to brush your teeth regularly means food particles stay in the mouth, encouraging bacteria to grow, and this can result in foul-smelling breath.
It may seem frustrating to have to worry about dental cleanliness when you already have to put up with wearing braces, but it is well worth the effort when you have a smile that is both straight and healthy.
Don’t Forget to Brush Your Teeth with Braces!
Here are a few things you can do to make your braces journey easier:
- Keep your dentist appointments throughout your treatment and remember to go for cleanings twice a year.
- Keep a healthy dental routine by brushing your teeth for a minimum of two minutes twice a day.
- Remember to floss twice a day, too. You will need to use the special flosser we provide to get in between the teeth and braces.
- Use short brush strokes when brushing around the braces so you get into every space where food particles may be hiding.
Good habits will make your treatment worthwhile and you’ll come out of it with a healthy, straight smile.
